Name: Murray Lewis Location: Kings Park, New York E-Mail: pegnmur@verizon.net Comments: Greetings Wellington. While reading through the recent posts, I found one requesting old pictures of Wellington. Unfortunately, I don't have any of their house but I do have some of mine. I was born in Yarmouth and lived at what is now 1942 Evangaline Trail. I attended Wellington School which was directly across the road from the Wellington Hall. The school was one room and the teacher taught grades 1A through 9. I think it was 1955 when the school was closed and we were bussed to the new consolidated school in Hebron. On Sundays we would attend church services at the "Hall", which were conducted by Rev. O'Grady from Hebron. At Christmas time there would be a Christmas party at the Hall and us kids had to do recitations which I hated. It was fun though and of course all the mothers brought cookies & candies to hand out.I have sent some old pictures to the Webmaster to put on the Wellington site. Wish I had more. Pierce's mill was down the hill from my house and it provided us kids with endless opportunites to get into mischief. The Millpond was a place to sail out homemade rafts and the stream leading from the mill had some of the best trout holes in the area. Fond memories of a bygone era. 1. These pictures are of the old Wellington School. It used to be located directly across the road from the Wellington Hall. It was a one room school with a cast iron stove in the middle & the outhouse was around back. The teacher taught grade 1A through grade 9. in 1955, when I went into drade 2, they closed it and we were bussed to Hebron Consolodated. It burned down in the 60's or 70's. 2. The team of oxen was owned by
Chester Watkins and his son Daryl. He used to haul logs
from somewhere in on the Strickland Rd. (back then we
called it the Burrell Rd). The winter pictures of the
mill were probably taken in 1961. the summer ones with
the oxen were 1964.
Item 3. These pictures were taken in
the 60's. The picture of the big house on the
Strickland house belonged to Vernon & Beth Pierce.
Vernon and his brother Willy, owned and operated the
mill. They and their sister Ethel Pierce were
tragically killed in a car accident at the Bluenose
Ferry terminal in Yarmouth in 1973.

Hello my name is
Michelle Eddy and I've been living in Wellington
for almost two years. As far as I know there are a few
businesses such as sheep farming, cattle farming,
and a garage. It is a small community just outside of
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Wellington has
it's own hall.
There are a few roads that lead to and from ,Wellington such as the Rodney road and the McCormick road. Wellington isn't a very big place but it has quite a few people. On a normal day, four Yarmouth school buses pass through Wellington, three are elementary/ Maple Grove and the last bus is for the high school. The scenery in Wellington is very beautiful in all of the seasons. In the spring everything is turning green and you can hear all the birds and animals, in the summer there is lots of children playing along with a lot of lupines and you can see a lot of tourists passing through because of the highway that Wellington is on. The fall is very pretty because of all the trees that are turning different colors and the air is crisp. The winter is truly the best because the snow covers the ground and trees making everything white. Sometimes in the winter the snow drifts get really high and the wind blows the snow around in circles. Some of the businesses in Wellington include the Antique Car place where people with antique cars gather information for things like parades and benefits. There are three or four different farms and farmers (obviously). Take my neighbor for example he raises sheep for wool and a source of food same as the cattle farm just down the road. F.H Bain is another business that is in the area. It specializes in repairing and building tractors, jeeps and transport trucks. Many people in the area work in the trucking industry and many own there own truck. I live right next door to a sheep farm where they sell wool and meat. Lots of tourists stop to take pictures in the summer and fall and some groups like Beavers or Guides gets tours of the farm. In the winter time he sends most of his sheep to an island off the French shore so they can be warmer in a barn. He has over three hundred sheep and about three different breeds. Some are black, white and some have horns. He also has a donkey and a few trained sheep dogs along with dog that is trained to keep out coyotes out of the fields. Wellington is also on the Evangeline trail, which is an important tourist attraction for Nova Scotia. Wellington has great weather. Some places are windy because there is flat land and no trees but otherwise it is mostly sunny. There is hardly any fog even if it's foggy in town. It is warmer in Wellington than it is in town and it always smells like freshly mown grass. All of the elementary school children go to the new school Meadow fields but that just started this year because they use to go to Hebron. All the teenagers either go to Yarmouth high school or Maple grove junior high. At the end of this page there will be pictures of Wellington. |
