Rum Running part - 3
1930's Rum Running
1. An old lady told me when she was young that she, her husband and her father in-
law would go to a nearby village to get a keg of bootleg rum. On the way back, the
lady placed the keg of rum under her long dress while sitting in the back of the car.
She did this because the police could not check the undergarments of a woman.
Upon arriving home the rum was evenly distributed into portions.
2. One fellow told me how he would take metal out of a junk yard and sell it to the
owner to buy candy only to steal it again and resell it to the owner. The junkyard
dealer was suspicious of this but could never prove anything.
3. One old fellow bought animal hides, metal and bottles. He would take the hair off
the hides and the ropes, putting the hair in a bag to sell later, because he was very
stingy.
4. One old guy told me how his father discovered someone stealing some of their
wood, so he told his son, "I'll fix him." The next day he went to the store and
bought six dynamite caps and inserted them into six pieces of wood. One fellow
asked him what he wanted to do with the caps, he said, "You'll find out in a couple
of days." A short time later these pieces of wood were put in the stove. They blew
through the top of the stove, through the first and second floors, then through the
roof of the house.
