Comments: I am traveling to Yarmouth on Sep 4th 2010 in hopes of tracking down my descendants. 

I have found an Edmund Ellis born in 1809, he lived in Port Maitland. He is my third-great-grandfather. A cemetary marker shows he is the son of "Benjamin" and Benjamin is the son of "John". 

In Massachusetts a "John Ellis" (who was a loyalist)left in appx 1795 with his family, no children names are listed. I am trying to make the connection to John Ellis who was born in Rochester Mass in 1746 as the person who went to Nova Scotia in appx 1795.
If anyone could help direct me to where I could find records, I would greatly appreciate it. 
Also looking for any descendants of these people.

Comments: I am searching for information on my mother's birthplace. Her maiden name is Helen Mary Comeau, (Muise) daughter of Edmund Joseph Comeau from Cheggogin. Her death certificate mentions Dorchester Ma.,USA, however, there is no record of this. I was wondering if this was her proper birthplace, or if anyone would know what it is. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks to the great people of Nova Scotia. I really miss it.

Comments: I noticed someone mentioned the name Nate Bain.  I am 68 years old, and still remember that man.  He was in charge of a summer boy's camp near Yarmouth where I spent a week as a kid, and Mr. Bain was wonderful.  He is my fondest memory of that long-ago summer!

Comments: Hello.  My parents were from Nova Scotia.  My mom was born and raised in Wedgeport; (Leblanc/Boudreau/Doucett families); I still have first cousins living in Wedgeport; and only hope that I can visit once again very soon.  The last time I visited Wedgeport was unfortunately at my grandmothers funeral in 1978.  My father was born and raised in Liverpool.  Both my parents have recently passed away; and they missed their home.  I know my mother missed her family. I love viewing all those tidy homes with their familiar greenery, especially the natural-looking areas with rocks and lupins, and also stirring pictures of the deep blue harbour waters. It reminds me of our many trips home to the East Pubnicos when we slowed down driving through all the villages from Barrington up to Pubnico, and from there to the new highway to our big and wonderful Town of Yarmouth! I remember one girl named McComiskey in our school at Lr East Pubnico (in 1946, just after the War) who lived in Charlesville, and I often wondered which house her family had lived in. Thank you for the pictures of Charlesville.  Whenever we drive through the village of Charlesville it reminds me of a wonderful news story from July 12, 1987. From this story I learned so much about people whose homes were familiar looking, but whose inhabitants I had never met, families I could only wonder about, that is, until the following wonderful news story --written by a James Keller-- told everything about their inate goodness and generosity, their humanity, their loving concern for their fellow man. Since that 1987 story was told, each drive through Charlesville has been all the more special because of the people who live in those tidy homes --and I can almost taste PEANUTBUTTER! N.S. BEACH 20 YEARS AGO NOW 
SETTLED ACROSS CANADA

HALIFAX -- Many swam to shore, others simply grabbed onto anything that would float. 

Hungry, thirsty and exhausted from spending nearly three weeks crossing the Atlantic in a cramped cargo freighter, 173 South Asian refugees -- mostly Sikhs -- stunned locals and sparked a frenzy of interest across the country when they appeared along a secluded Nova Scotia beach 20 years ago. 

Paul Sandhu, who was just 22 years old at the time, says much of the group doubted they would actually make it to Canada until they were dropped in the water near the tiny fishing village of Charlesville in the early hours of July 12, 1987. 

``We're eating every 24 hours a little rice, not enough drinking water, we couldn't take showers, we had no clothes or beds, one blanket for four guys,'' recalls Sandhu, who lives with his family in Brampton, Ont., and owns a motel. 

``We don't know if we'd get there or not ... and we don't know where we are going.'' 

They spent much of their time on the ship in a five-metre-deep hold, which had a grill-covered hole on the floor for human waste. The hold was later found smelling of garbage and littered with torn and abandoned clothing, papers, toiletries, playing cards and foreign newspapers, all left behind when the group headed for land. 

``It was dark,'' says Sandhu, adding it took 15 minutes to get everyone off the ship. ``We knew it was not too far from the land and we just swam, but not everybody. We made stuff (that would float) that could come off the ship.'' 

After reaching the shore, they were first met by confused locals and then the RCMP. Their next stop was a nearby fire hall, before the refugees were bused to a military base in Halifax to be checked over by doctors and interviewed by immigration officials. 

Eventually, they were released and given work permits while the federal government assessed their claims, which were all successful. Most settled in Vancouver and Toronto, and started new careers and families. 

But 20 years ago, their futures were less certain. 

Most of the 172 men and one woman had already left their native India to escape persecution for their religious beliefs. Sandhu, who had been living in Germany for more than a year, says the European countries where they were seeking refuge appeared unwilling to let them stay for much longer. 

So rather than face the possibility of being deported to India, they paid as much as US$5,000 each to board the Amelie, a 59-metre Chilean-registered cargo ship, near the Dutch port of Rotterdam. 

The smugglers who brought the refugees to Nova Scotia told them someone would pick them up, but whoever was supposed to meet them never showed up, says Sandhu. They had no idea where they were, and one of the refugees reportedly asked for a taxi to take them to Toronto.

In Charlesville, news of the group's arrival quickly spread through the small community, with some locals offering to take them in for the night or feed them during their brief stay. 

Rosalie Stoddard became something of a celebrity after she organized breakfast for the new arrivals at the fire hall in nearby Woods Harbour. 

Stoddard, who worked in the hall's kitchen at the time, recalls the group arriving on school buses and filing in to sit at a collection of tables. A few had some cuts and bruises from their journey, she says, but otherwise were in good shape. 

``They were hungry and they were really thirsty,'' says Stoddard. 

``We knew it was going to be hours before they ever got to Halifax, so we just decided to feed them. We knew they would probably be vegetarian, and we figured peanut butter and jam -- they could probably eat that.'' 

Stoddard says the large group talked among themselves but said very little to anyone else. Few spoke any English. They were orderly, very calm and even helped prepare the food and drinks. 

The meal of peanut butter sandwiches -- along with Kool-Aid and tea -- earned Stoddard the nickname ``the peanut butter lady,'' and she says the whole affair has left a permanent mark on the area. 

``I don't think it will ever be forgotten,'' says Stoddard, adding that some of the refugees have returned to visit several times since they first arrived. ``It's part of our history.'' 

The arrival of the Sikhs amplified a national debate over immigration reform. Then-prime minister Brian Mulroney recalled Parliament weeks after the refugees arrived to tackle revised laws designed to tighten the system. 

Legislation passed in the House of Commons a year later gave the federal government new powers to quickly assess cases and turn false claimants away. 

However, if a similar group arrived today, the final outcome would likely be very similar, says Immigration Department spokesman Jon Stone. 

Stone, who was also the department's spokesman when the Sikhs arrived in 1987, said procedures are better defined and there are some new structures in place to help evaluate immigration claims more quickly, but the basics haven't changed. 

``An outsider's view of things would not see much difference in the actual process,'' says Stone. ``Essentially, if the Amelie was to arrive today under the same circumstances as 20 years ago, more or less the same thing would happen. Should they be found to not represent a risk or danger to the public, in theory they could be granted temporary work permits.'' 

Stone added that while it has long been reported that 174 refugees arrived at Charleswood 20 years ago, the correct figure is 173. 

Several people were convicted in connection with the smuggling plot, including Rolf Nygren, then 47, who was sentenced to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine for orchestrating the plan. 

The Amelie was seized by the RCMP a day after dropping off the refugees. It was sold to a Nova Scotia businessman two years later.

Comments: I was born in Yarmouth in 1946 and me and my family moved to Montreal in the early 1950's. Just about every year after that we visited my grandmother on Prince St. up until 1980. I just couldn't manage to get down there too often after that.  A lot has changed since I was in Yarmouth last...I plan to visit my aunt Barbara and uncle Bill next year if all goes well. I am very proud of my family heritage...my grandfather was Laurie Smith, founder of CJLS radio station, and am very proud of my hometown Yarmouth.

Comments: So nice reading Marie's stories of Sand Beach as that is where my ancesters originated. They were Hatfields who originally settled in Tusket then moved to Sand Beach. Great to hear of my great Aunt May and Aunt Winnie Rogers and their candy making. I spent a lot of time with them and I still remember their wonderful sugar cookies as well as the candy.
Was fun to see my cousin Mary Wyman's picture in the picture of the Sand Beach school of 1940.
My Great Great grandfather built the" Haunted House" and lived in with his family when not at Sea.My mother was married in that house when it belonged to Ken and Marion Veinot in the 1970's .Her second marriage.She was Catherine Hatfield Moores Hamm and Married James MacRae at that time.
My Great Grandfather Abraham Hatfield and his wife Annie lived in Sand Beach with their Children ,Elsie Perry Hatfield Moores was my grandmother.My Great grandfather did not like the Sea and was a carpenter who built several homes in Yarmouth. Nancy

Comments: Dear Friends in Yarmouth and county,  My heart goes out to you during these days of deluge. We got lots of rain up here on the island --and are still getting more right now, but nothing like you dear people received. When I heard the name Quinan in the news, my heart went straight there to those people who were so kind and hospitable to my husband and me when we spent a week there, way down by the water in a borrowed camper. I was driving to Tusket and Pubnico researching genealogy and family stories and so on, so Quinan was our beautiful place of repose at the end of each day.

I must say it was challenging to drive that summer evening through Quinan in thick fog after having spent too many hours enjoyable with more of our dear cousins in Pubnico. A gentleman Mountie stopped me as I inched my way through the fog. I suppose he noticed our PEI plates and then our gray hair, so he asked me why I was driving so slowly, explaining that it could be dangerous for anyone driving behind us at normal speed, so I was glad to have his advice on defensive driving. I daid I'm trying to find the short cut into Quinan, and he replied that was not a very good idea in this case. He asked me if I knew the road in from Tusket and of course I did, haviing done taht route often during daylight.  He generously offered to lead me to Tusket and put me on the little winding and hilly road to Quinan, and we again inched our way right down to water's edge where there were one or two other camper trailers. We were so glad to have arrived safely and had a great sleep. Next day we visited people in Quinan, the cemetery (prayed at the grave of former teacher Lawrence Doucette) and we met the parish priest out in the yard --he had a black cat-- and then visited a Doucette family at the beginning of the Quinan Road, admiring the Tusket River just down from their lovely home.  Great memories, so when the ATV news mentioned Quinan, you can imagine all the wonderful thoughts that surfaced and my silent prayer for all Yarmouth county in the heavy and persistent rain of early November, 2010.  God bless you all, marie

Comments:   I attended Camp Moosewa during the summers of 1936 and 1937.  I grew up in Belmont, Mass.  Mrs. George Cain (Mater) was a very good friend of my mother and grandmother.  The Cain's lived very close to us.  I did
not know Vic very well as he lived in the Virginia area and was active in selling school cirricula to private schools in that area.  Carroll, who was called Gint, was one of my teachers in Junior High School.
  Mater and  Pater passed many years ago.  Gint did have a son who is a few years younger that me, but I have no idea where he resides. (I am now 82.

Comments: Greetings to all! For the past several years I am able to feel closeer to the people of Yarmouth, not only in fond memories, but also, and especially while doing our Christmas baking. For this I am grateful to my late sister, Eileen, and to her friends, guardians and coaches in the Yarmouth Special Olympics. One year they put out a lovely cookbook, and every year I use some of the recipes from that very fine book. There is a cake with raisins and I use that as basis for a fruit cake, adding whatever I have in the cupboard that's suitable. There are some really great recipes in that book and it's such a neat and handy little recipe book. Best of all, they are from Yarmouth and counties. Thank you all!

              As the cold, northern wind blew his beard ‘round his head.
              He worked and he slaved ‘til the first light of dawn
              And, before we awoke … he was finished and gone!
              But, the message he wrote was quite clear, nonetheless …

‘Twas the night before Christmas & out on the ranch, The pond was froze over & so was the branch.
The snow was piled up belly-deep to a mule. The kids were all home on vacation from school,
And happier young folks you never did see, just all sprawled around a-watching TV.
Then suddenly, some time around 8 o'clock, there came a surprise that gave them a shock! The power went off, the TV went dead! 
When Grandpa came in from out in the shed with an armload of wood, the house was all dark. "Just what I expected," they heard him remark.
"Them power line wires must be down from the snow. Seems sorter like times on the ranch long ago."
"I'll hunt up some candles," said Mom. "With their light, And the fireplace, I reckon we'll make out all right."
The teen-agers all seemed enveloped in gloom. Then Grandpa came back from a trip to his room, uncased his old fiddle & started to play that old Christmas song about bells on a sleigh.
Mom started to sing, & 1st thing they knew both Pop & the kids were all singing it, too.
They sang Christmas carols, they sang "Holy Night," Their eyes all a-shine in the ruddy firelight.
They played some charades Mom recalled from her youth, and Pop read a passage from God's Book of Truth.
They stayed up till midnight-and, would you believe, The youngsters agreed 'twas a fine Christmas Eve.
Grandpa rose early, some time before dawn And when the kids wakened, the power was on.
"The Power Company sure got the line repaired quick," Said Grandpa - & no one suspected his trick.
Last night, for the sake of some old-fashioned fun, He had pulled the main switch - the old Son-of-a-Gun!

Comments: I just finished reading stories about Wyman Road, Sand Beach and enjoyed it very much. I was surprised to see an old school picture  and my father and uncle are in it.  I have no pictures of him as a child and this was wonderful to see.

2-Looking for any info on Marjorie Catherine Allen of Kellys Cove. What was her husband's full name? Did she have children? Who were her parents and grandparents and which village were they from? What was her maiden name and her mother's maiden name? Any info would be appreciated.

3-I too love Yarmouth. It always makes me smile going, and sad leavin'!
