It is my humble opinion that everything possible should be done to preserve the entire length of the stream. All too often, these watercourses are simply run through culverts or filled in, thus destroying forever the fragile ecosystems they really are. There are a myriad of such streams in the city of Toronto, Ontario, which were once thriving homes to many types of aquatic animals and are now completely underground and in most cases so polluted that they could not support anything remotely resembling life. I can remember growing up on Pleasant Street and crossing a field and a stone wall to reach one of the tributaries of Broad Brook in search of tadpoles. There was a large rock in this wall which served as a place to lie back and catch a few rays. I believe that this particular area is now the home of a manufacturing facility and I do not know what became of the little creek that we once waded in. Progress can be a good thing, but we must always remember that it comes
with a pricetag sometimes much higher than we can afford. Once upon a time
the Don River in Eastend Toronto was a haven for upwards of 100 species
of bird as well as countless types of freshwater fish. Now it is a polluted
wasteland home to mainly scavengers and little else. There are steps being
taken to repair the damage done by man but they are largely futile.
